Here I Stand

Most people think of October 31, 2026 as candy, jack-o-lanterns, and spooky costumes. Think Halloween. But on October 31, 2026, at Faith Lutheran, we will celebrate the 509th anniversary of the Reformation.
I can’t imagine the boldness it took Martin Luther to stand up against the entire forces of the Holy Roman Empire. But, a force far greater than any in this world was with Luther.
You may ask, “Why did he stand” against all these worldly powers (there was no separation of church and state)? He did, because he knew God’s truth was worth the fight. He knew the purity of the Gospel was on the line. So many people of his era were being crushed by fear, striving, and burdens when attempting to earn God’s righteousness apart from God’s grace. Martin Luther cared deeply for the souls of humanity who Jesus Christ died for on the Cross and rose again to bring abundant life. He knew this truth from the Scriptures and Luther chose to stand.
As a result, the Reformation was born.
These are the radical teachings that addressed a key issue that needed reforming:
- Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone): The Bible is the supreme and final authority for Christian faith and practice.
- Sola Fide (Faith Alone): Justification before God is received though faith in Christ alone, apart from any human works or merit.
- Sola Gratia (Grace Alone): Salvation is an unearned gift from God.
- Solus Christus (Christ Alone): Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and humanity.
- Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God Alone): All glory for creation, salvation, and human existence belongs to God and no one else.
When I think of Martin Luther, I don’t imagine a perfect man. I have read a lot of his works and sermons. Yes, he was a sinner and needed Gods redemption like the rest of us. While he was flawed, he came up with some absolute “perfect” quotes. One of my favorites that I will be remembering on October 31, 2026 is as follows:
“The true treasure of the church (which includes Faith Lutheran, Naples, FL) is the most holy gospel of the glory and grace of God.” - Martin Luther
A Blessed Reformation!
